This collection is an interdisciplinary group of materials some of which compiled by the Critical Theory Institute (CTI), a research group at the University of California, Irvine, comprising 15 to 20 active members from various UCI departments in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It also includes materials related to seminars, meetings, conferences, and institutional records. 

All collections are described and include fully searchable guides in the Online Archive of California (OAC). The status of an unprocessed collection is noted. Please contact us in advance regarding access to these collections.

MICHEL OREN RECORDINGS OF THE MARXIST LITERARY GROUP

The Michel Oren collection of Marxist Literary Group recordings contains 21 lectures given by Fredric Jameson, Stanley Aronowitz, and Terry Eagleton at the 1977 Summer Institute of the Marxist Literary Group of the Modern Language Association held in St. Cloud, Minnesota. These lectures, on 25 cassettes, were recorded by Michel Oren who attended the Institute as a graduate student.

SAFAA FATHY VIDEO RECORDINGS OF JACQUES DERRIDA

This collection comprises video recordings made by Safaa Fathy to document selected public lectures and other activities of the French philosopher and critical theorist Jacques Derrida between 2000 and 2004. Events include public lectures, panel discussions, conferences, and ceremonies. Some events contain recordings of additional participants, including theorists such as Jürgen Habermas, Hélène Cixous, and Axel Honneth. Fathy was a student of Jacques Derrida, resulting in a collaboration between them on the book Tourner les mots: Au bord d'un film (Galilée- Arte éditions, 2000).

UC IRVINE CRITICAL THEORY EMPHASIS RECORDS

This collection contains administrative records and flyers from Critical Theory Emphasis (CTE), an interdisciplinary program for graduate students at the University of California, Irvine's School of Humanities. The majority of the records belonged to former Emphasis director Alexander Gelley and focus on general administration of the Emphasis from 1995-1998. Flyers in this collection include announcements for events sponsored by the CTE.
